Since Amtrak promotes the Parlour Car as a selling point for this route, they should have put a notice on the website informing customers that it was being decommissioned so that customers could take that into account before buying tickets. I have to assume Amtrak has known for a while that it would be taking the Parlour Car out of service permanently this does not seem like a decision the company would make impulsively and certainly not a mere 3 days beforehand. :-) I understand there will be a regular dining car on the train, but the reserved dining area that was associated with the Parlour Car will be gone.ĭoes anyone know if Amtrak will be replacing the other Parlour Car amenities, like the lounge / observation area, the theatre, or the library? Was the Parlour Car the only car with those amenities? We paid over $5000 for our tickets (round-trip) and while I completely understand that there are many other wonderful elements to this trip beyond the Parlour Car, I have to say that the Parlour Car was influential in our deciding to take this route rather than the other one we were considering (LA to Chicago). They were very excited about aspects of the Pacific Parlour Car like the swiveling chairs in the lounge, the theatre and the library, and I have to admit I was excited about the bar.

We have been looking at pictures and descriptions of the Coast Starlight route with our kids, as we have never taken a train vacation before. I just received the same notice, that the Pacific Parlour Car, which was operational when we booked our tickets, will be permanently taken out of service in 3 days. My husband and I recently booked our first ever overnight trip on Amtrak we are taking our four children from LA to Portland (and back) during Spring Break (March 2018).
